How Americans See Marriage Today

Marriage, and the idea of what marriage means, is constantly evolving. So 60 Minutes and Vanity Fair teamed up to get to the bottom of what Americans think and feel about marriage now.
Out of the people surveyed, 53 percent believe the main purpose of marriage today is to mark the commitment of two people in love—which we couldn’t agree with more. And 73 percent think that a beautiful love story that ends in marriage is much more entertaining than a torrid affair that breaks up a marriage. (Amen to that!) And while 64 percent of people surveyed said monogamy is fundamental to a relationship, about a quarter of respondents (26 percent) cited they don’t think it’s realistic.

What threatens a marriage most? Jealousy, according to 26 percent of Americans surveyed, with poverty not too far behind (19 percent), then boredom (18 percent). The media outlets also asked participants an open-ended question on what advice they’d give to someone about to get married. The two most popular responses were to make sure you’re compatible with your partner (12 percent) and to always communicate and listen to one another (also 12 percent). We think that’s some pretty good advice!
Does it get any more romantic than that? We have to say, this love story is one for the actual books. Congratulations to the happy couple! See photos of their intimate London wedding below.
